I like to try and understand the 3D form of something by breaking it down into boxy shapes for the skeleton, which are overlaid with organic shapes for the muscles.
I based these drawings on a really useful book called Dog Anatomy by Peter C. Goody, which shows the muscles and skeleton of a dog in layers from lots of different views. (the basic anatomy of cat and dog bodies are very similar, with slightly different proportions).
If you want to refer to this book and dont feel like paying for it, go to the library and request that they buy it, if they dont already have it - it should cost you nothing (thats what I did).
